The Minorities and Three Parallel Rivers Experience
Explore the original Shangri La
- Description:
- When turn-of-the-century British novelist James Hilton coined his famous term, "Shangri-La", he was believed to have been traveling through Yunnan. It is home to a diverse range of natural habitats, rainforests, vast river valleys and gorges. Yunnan represents China's most varied ecosystem within a single province. Similar to its diverse terrain, ethnic minorities are also found in greater numbers here. These include tribes like the Bai with their distinct white homes, the matriarchal Mosuo, and the Thai-influenced Dai. Each group still retains much of its individual identity, including customs, dialect and traditional dress that is as fascinating as it is colourful.
